dde house

Originally a set of two flats, the existing residence needed alterations and additions to accommodate a family of four. Some parts of the house were unusable, the bathroom was too small and there was limited connection with the outer areas. The original building fabric was in good condition.

The client brief was to create open plan living and dining areas opening onto yard with covered deck/play area. Also add side entry to northern part of house and a new bathroom and laundry, and level yard for kids’ playing area. Focus was on efficient circulation throughout space and light into living areas; use of modern materials including lightweight walls, polished concrete floors and plenty of storage. Energy efficiency measures included rainwater tank for irrigation and toilet water cisterns, passive solar design and sustainable building materials.
